What Makes Strong Reasoning?

Authors use reasoning to explain how their evidence supports their claim.

Strong reasoning

  • draws a conclusion from the evidence and
  • supports the claim.
Example

Claim: Katniss consistently underestimates her competitors in the Hunger Games.

Quote: Katniss describes Rue as a “small yellow flower” (Collins 99).

Strong Reasoning
The word “small,” as well as the comparison to a delicate flower, shows that Katniss does not think Rue will be a tough competitor.
Weak Reasoning: Not Connected to the Claim
Katniss’s description shows that she feels protective of young Rue.
Weak Reasoning: Not Connected to the Evidence
Katniss’s arrogance lands her in several dangerous situations.
More Evidence, Not Reasoning
Katniss says that twelve-year-old Rue reminds her of a bird (Collins 99).
