When to use therefore

Therefore means “for that reason.”

Example

Annie ran; therefore she was early.

Annie ran is the reason she was early.

Conjunctions connect words, phrases, or clauses. Therefore is an example of a conjunctive adverb (a.k.a. “THAMO”).

Use therefore when you connect a reason to a result.

Examples

Didi just went to the store; therefore we have fresh apples to make a pie.


Jen forgot to put gas in her jet pack; she, therefore, will be late to soccer practice.

Note how each of the different THAMOs has a different meaning:
