Comparative vs. Superlative Adjectives

Comparative adjectives compare two nouns to each other.

Superlative adjectives compare a noun to all members of its group.

When using short adjectives, add -er to compare two nouns and -est to compare a group.

Examples

Not Comparing:

Oliver’s hair is soft.


Comparing Two Things:

Oliver’s hair is softer than silk.


Comparing a Group:

Oliver’s hair is the softest in our whole class.

When using long adjectives, add more to compare two nouns and most to compare a group.

Not Comparing:

Lo’s puppy is excited.

Comparing Two Things:

Lo’s puppy is more excited than mine.

Comparing a Group:

Lo’s puppy is the most excited one here.
