By vs. Buy vs. Bye

By can take on many meanings, including “near,” “according to,” and “not later than.”

Buy means “purchase.”

Bye has two meanings:

  • Most commonly, it’s used as an abbreviation for “goodbye.”
  • Less commonly, in sports, a “bye” means that an individual or team can skip a round in a competition.
