Key Takeaways from the 2023 ACT® National Profile Report
ACT scores, college and career readiness fall for sixth straight year
The ACT recently released scores for the class of 2023. Key takeaways from the ELA sections include:
- The average English score fell to 18.6 out of 36.
- On average, students performed worse on the English test than on the math, reading, and science tests.
- The average writing score fell to 6.1 out of 12.
- The share of students who met the English College Readiness Benchmark saw a steep decline.
According to ACT CEO Janet Godwin, “This is the sixth consecutive year of declines in average scores. The hard truth is that we are not doing enough to ensure that graduates are truly ready for postsecondary success in college and career.”
